NCSDCC Spring Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order by Chairman Glenn DuBois.

Minutes of the summer meeting in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, were approved.

Martin Lancaster requested that the financial report be approved.

Dr. Peter Spina, Executive Director of Cornell University’s International Institute for Community College Development–presented "A New Professional Development Resource for Community College Administrators and Faculties". Professional development topics included: how to deal with the board, collective bargaining, what to look for on a resume, what you can and should ask during an interview, entrance and exit interviews, training for trustees, relationships with trustees, how to bring funding up to the next level, and public policy-how to deal with state legislatures.

Art Cohen, Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC), is working with the Carnegie Foundation to try to reclassify community colleges by cirriculum. ERIC is providing training for future practitioners and books about community colleges. Recent surveys conducted by ERIC have had very high response rates. Some of the surveys conducted were: a faculty survey, a study of cirriculum, and a national study of transfer rates.

Jan Motta provided information on the summer meeting in Boston, August 5-8, 2001.

Kathrine Boswell, Education Commission of the States, addressed the concern of community college administrators in the development of specific strategies to recruit and retain proven and promising teachers.

David Stevens presented information on the AACC Unemployment Insurance Wage Data Project.

David Baime provided a legislative update on FY 2002 Appropriations. George Boggs welcomed the State Directors to AACC’s convention.

State Directors shared state-by-state reports on circumstances affecting the administration of community colleges. Major issues discussed were: funding in light of the recent economic downward trend, transfer rates, shortage of qualified teachers (especially minorities), pressures to prepare more trained workers, technology and distance learning, accountability and understanding of data.

The meeting adjourned at 3:00 p.m.

The National Council of State Directors of Community Colleges is an affiliated council of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC).  The council provides a forum for the exchange of information about developments, trends, and problems in state systems of community colleges.  

Through our affiliation with AACC, we also strive to affect national legislation that impacts our colleges and state agencies.

This is the only Council that represents the collective interest of state agencies and state boards of community colleges.  This council is a valuable forum to help state directors deal with the changes in attitude and policies towards community colleges at the international, federal, state and local levels.  We will share information and learn lessons from each other to better serve the interests of our institutions in the coming years.
